Educational First Steps was initiated by David Munson, a Dallas philanthropist, and oil and gas investor. In 1990, Mr. Munson and his wife, Mona, Sandra Estess, and former Dallas ISD Superintendent Linus Wright and his wife Joyce formed Educational First Steps. Mr. Munson’s vision lives on today as we pay tribute to him by naming the launch of our virtual lecture series.
The Munson Series is an opportunity for EFS to gather virtually with interested supporters from across the area, the state, and the country and raise funds and awareness, all in a digital format. Proceeds from the events make a direct impact on North Texas childcare providers and the communities they serve.
November 2020 – Emmanuel Acho, former football star and Fox Sports Analyst led the opening event in personal conversation around Equity, sharing insights from his childhood and sports career.
January 2021 – John Quinones, host and creator of ABC’s popular hidden camera ethical dilemma series, What Would You Do?, spoke on Resilience and highlighted the critical work of Educational First Steps and early educators.
March 2021 – Wendy Mogel, internationally acclaimed psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and international public speaker, closed the 3-part series event speaking on Independence. Dr. Mogel touched on the importance of allowing children to be who they are, make mistakes, and give them space to develop the necessary independence skills crucial for school and life success.
Among the sponsors are Bank of America, Bank of Texas, Berry Corporation, Courtney & Courtney Properties, Marconi, PNC Bank, and Scheef & Stone Solid Counsel and many additional companies and individuals.

Through the generosity of sponsors and ticket buyers, EFS can support partner centers and meet their most crucial needs while also helping elevate early learning environments for over 8,000 children and 1,500 educators throughout the area through EFS quality-building programs.
We look forward to continuing this virtual lecture series. Stay tuned for the announcement of next year’s Munson Lecture Speakers coming soon.
